Project overview

Conservation work at one of England's most iconic historic buildings

The Tower of London is one of the most visited and significant historic buildings in the world — a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has stood at the heart of English history since William the Conqueror began its construction in 1066. To be entrusted with conservation and repair work here is one of the greatest honours a building conservation practice can receive.

The project

Tower Green building repairs — carried out to the highest historic standards

MDJ Conservation was commissioned to carry out building repairs at Tower Green — the historic courtyard within the Tower of London's inner ward, most famous as the site of private executions of high-profile prisoners throughout the Tudor period.

Working within a UNESCO World Heritage Site of this significance demands the very highest standards of care, craftsmanship and material knowledge. Every intervention was carefully considered, using only traditional materials and methods appropriate to the historic fabric — lime mortars, matched stone repair and authentic conservation techniques developed over MDJ's 30 years of heritage experience.

The project involved working in close collaboration with Historic Royal Palaces, the independent charity that manages the Tower. All works were carried out with minimum disruption to the site, which remains one of the UK's busiest tourist attractions throughout the year.

For Mike David Jones and the MDJ team, working at the Tower of London represents the pinnacle of what a conservation practice can achieve — a testament to three decades of building expertise, trusted relationships and an unwavering commitment to doing things the right way.

The Tower of London ravens
The Tower ravens

Historic guardians of the Tower

Legend has it that if the ravens of the Tower of London ever leave, the Crown and the Tower itself will fall. Six ravens are kept at the Tower at all times — and during our time working here, they were very much at home on site.

It's a privilege few building contractors ever experience — working inside one of the world's most extraordinary historic sites, surrounded by nearly a thousand years of history.
